The X-Files (Reboot)

I just wanted to throw a quick comment out on the 6-episode X-Files reboot on Fox recently. It was wonderful to see Fox Mulder and Dana Scully together again, and their chemistry and rapport did not seem to diminish in the intervening years, marking them in my opinion as one of the best TV duos ever. The shows held the same spirit as the previous iteration (along with two feature-length movies) – cheeky, scary, paranoid, and mysterious.

My favorite episodes were the bookends – My Struggle Episode 1 and Episode 2 – with David Duchovny’s narration as Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s narration as Scully in the beginning of these episodes, respectively, absolutely stunning and succinctly summarizing their lives and history as FBI agents tasked with handling the X-Files. The other episodes in between were hit-or-miss (“Babylon” was probably my favorite, with an appearance by the Lone Gunmen and Mulder’s “trip”) and were standalone mysteries apart from the larger conspiracy in My Struggle. With the surprise appearance of the Cigarette-Smoking Man, the conspiracy in My Struggle promises to keep the franchise going, as the end message in the opening credits of the final episode (“This Is The End”) clearly appears to be misdirection.
